Acupuncture is a medical protocol that involves the insertion of tiny needles in specific points on the body to correct energetic imbalances. Since its original inception in China over 2,500 years ago, acupuncture has been used to promote overall health and well-being as well as to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.
Acupuncture works by balancing the flow of Qi through the body’s Meridian system. When is Qi is abundant and flowing freely, there is balance and wellness physically, mentally, and emotionally. When Qi is obstructed or deficient, symptoms of pain, disease, emotional and/or mental imbalance can occur.
From a Western perspective, there are various theories about how acupuncture works, all pointing towards the wondrous complexity of this powerful system of medicine. Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural pain-killing chemicals, endorphins. It also increases production of adenosine, an amino acid that reduces chronic pain. Acupuncture improves micro-circulation within the body. It reduces inflammation. Acupuncture also regulates serotonin which positively affects mood and has a calming effect.
